AI Overviews Are Taking the Click Before Your Page Gets a Chance

Rankings used to give SEO teams a clear sense of control.

A page ranked in the top three. The title looked decent. The traffic followed. Everyone knew what to fix when numbers dropped.

AI Overviews have made that comfort weaker.

A page can still rank near the top and lose a large share of clicks because the answer now appears before the user reaches the organic result. The searcher asks a question. Google gives a summary. The user gets enough context and leaves without opening the page.

The ranking did not fail.

The click path changed.

Marketers need to understand this difference because the wrong diagnosis leads to wasted work. Many teams will rewrite pages, publish more blogs, change meta titles, and chase keyword movement. None of that solves the real issue if the query itself is now being answered directly inside the search result.

Informational content feels the impact first.

Definitions, how to queries, basic explainers, step based content, and broad awareness pages are easier for AI systems to summarise. A user searching what is account based marketing or how does local SEO work may not need to click if the overview gives a clean answer.

Commercial searches are becoming more exposed too.

A buyer comparing tools, services, agencies, or category options may see an AI generated summary that shapes their shortlist before they visit any website. That matters for Indian B2B brands because buying behaviour here is comparison heavy. A founder in Bengaluru, a marketing head in Mumbai, or a sales leader in Gurgaon will scan the fastest credible answer before deciding which brand deserves time.

Visibility has moved from ranking alone to being selected inside the answer.

That does not mean every SEO page should be rewritten for AI citations. Some queries will not return meaningful traffic even if your brand appears. Some pages should be optimised to influence the AI answer. Some should be rebuilt to win clicks from deeper commercial searches. Some should be connected to stronger decision pages through better internal linking.

The hard part is choosing where to fight.

A broad top of funnel page may still be useful for authority, but it may no longer deserve the same traffic expectations. A comparison page, use case page, pricing support page, or problem led page may deserve more effort because the user still needs judgment, proof, and detail beyond a short AI answer.

Teams looking at AI Overviews stealing clicks need a sharper reporting model. Search Console will show impressions and clicks, but it will not cleanly separate every AI Overview impact. A practical review has to look at queries where impressions hold, rankings stay stable, and CTR drops without an obvious page level issue.

That pattern usually says something important.

The brand is still visible, but the search result is doing more of the work before the user arrives.

The fix is not panic publishing.

Write pages with clear answer blocks. Use headings that match real questions. Make facts easy to extract. Add comparison depth where buyers need judgment. Build stronger topical authority around the subject. Improve internal paths from informational content to commercial pages. Track where the brand is cited, ignored, or replaced by competitors inside AI led answers.

Better content now has two jobs.

It should help the machine understand why the brand deserves to be referenced.

It should give the human a reason to click when the summary is not enough.

SEO is not becoming smaller. It is becoming more honest.

Weak content that existed only to capture broad clicks will struggle. Useful content with authority, structure, and commercial depth will still matter. Brands that keep measuring only rankings will feel confused. Brands that measure visibility, citation, CTR, and buyer movement together will see the shift earlier.

AI Overviews are not stealing every click.

They are stealing the easy ones.

The serious work is to earn the harder clicks that still influence pipeline.
